Supporting Fair Work

Fair work is work that offers effective voice, opportunity, security, fulfilment and respect; that balances the rights and responsibilities of employers and workers and that can generate benefits for individuals, organisations and society. Fair work drives success, wellbeing and prosperity for individuals, businesses, organisations and society.

The aim of our Fair Work Officers is to work across Dumfries and Galloway designing and implementing strategies to engage with businesses to create awareness of and promote the core values of fair work and inclusive growth, including:

  • Encouraging and supporting employers to provide support and invest in training, learning and skills development for current and future jobs.

  • Encourage businesses to promote equality of opportunity

  • Use buddying and mentoring to support workers with distinctive need

  • Encourage a commitment to supporting the  Real Living Wage and no exploitative zero hours contracts

Developing Your Employees

Key to the success of any business is its workforce and the ongoing recruitment, retention and development of employees. Dumfries and Galloway Employment TAP can help your business recruit, maintain and develop its workforce and make it easier for you to grow the potential of your employees.

Enhancing Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Ongoing changes and developments within the working environment require an increasingly literate workforce. It is estimated that literacy skills cost the UK economy £10 billion annually. Evidence suggests employees who improve their reading; writing; language; computing and number skills usually take less time off work, improve the quality of their work and show greater willingness to learn.

Help is available for your business and employees to support the development of literacy and numeracy, including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Basic Computing.

Council staff working in Community Learning and Development can work with you to develop tailor made and contextualised work based literacy programmes that suit you and your employees.
